The Scholarship Success Collective
Ready to stop wishing that your academic journal article would somehow write itself?
(It won’t. I know. I’m sorry.)
If you’re an academic writer tired of always trying (but failing?) to get your journal article written, let’s talk.
You know you need to start publishing your work and develop your own scholarly ideas, voice, and identity, but I’m guessing that you feel totally overwhelmed, exhausted, and intimidated by the idea of even writing a journal article and don’t feel like you have the writing chops (much less the ideas or the confidence) necessary to get your writing published.
Join my academic writing program and let me show you how to manage your writing fears, create powerful rhetorical moves in your writing, and develop an idea that really MATTERS. Let’s get you published!
You probably feel like it’s your fault that you’re struggling with your writing.
But real problem that no one’s talking about is how your graduate program failed to prepare you to become a effective, efficient, or productive professional academic writer. Sure, you learned a lot about other people’s ideas and started thinking up a few of your own. As a graduate student, you probably wrote a bunch of bad seminar papers during some frantic late-night writing binges fueled by coffee, panic, and sheer desperation.
I’m also guessing that no one taught you how develop your good ideas into real scholarly arguments that matter or how to get them out into the world in the form of powerful and publishable scholarship. You’re expected to just figure of how to write and get published on your own, alone and without help or support. And the fact that no one talks about academic writing or publishing (it’s weirdly like Fight Club) means that too many scholars just like you are struggling way more than necessary to figure out how to get their work published.
And make no mistake. Your writing struggles are costing you professionally (besides making your feel crappy about yourself). After all, publication is the magic ticket to some nice things like academic jobs, raises, promotion, tenure, grants, and funding.
More importantly, if you’re not getting your great ideas out into the world through publication, you’re not making the impact you want to make on your field or in the broader world. And that’s where your work really matters. We need all the good ideas you’ve got to help us think differently about some of the most challenging problems in the world today and start figuring out how to solve them.
Let’s do better, shall we?
How would you like to have the community support, structure, accountability, and actual writing instruction you need to get your article written and published so you can start helping us think about the world in new ways even if you're full of crippling self-doubt about your writing and ideas?
HERE’S WHAT I BELIEVE: ACADEMIC WRITING IS A LEARNABLE SKILL.
What’s going to give you the skills and confidence to get writing done and sent your into the world is learning powerful new rhetorical strategies combined with a community to give you constructive feedback, emotional support, accountability, and a safe place to talk about your writing, people who really understand not only your ideas, but understand YOU and your writing struggles.
That’s exactly what my clients get when they work with me.
Welcome to the Scholarship Success Collective
The Scholarship Success Collective is a unique fourteen week (an introductory session + twelve weeks of work + a catchup week) course that finally teaches you everything you never learned about academic writing and publishing. Together, we’ll work together to help you develop your good ideas into great scholarship and master the rhetorical skills you must have to make your mark in the world of ideas. Best of all, you’ll be putting your new skills into practice as you work towards creating a piece of publishable scholarship.
This is THE academic writing course that’s finally going transform your ideas into real scholarship that gets read and cited so you can change how we think about the world around us.
WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE DIFFERENT?
First, there’s a method, a curriculum, and a plan. (Ever tried to find a destination without a map and ended up hopelessly lost? Oh, hey, me too, and it was a mess.)
Instead, we’ll be roughly following Wendy Belcher’s indispensable academic journal article writing workbook week by week. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by the idea of writing an article (I mean, where do you even start?!), you’ll have bite-sized actionable steps to follow each week. You can totally do this.
Second, unlike a lot of online courses these days that recycle one-size-fits-all pre-recorded video content, I teach this course LIVE. (Yup, you get me and my bad jokes, all live!) You’ll get kind and actionable real-time feedback and the accountability and structure you need to make serious progress on your writing project. You can ask all of the burning questions you’ve always wanted to ask about academic writing and publishing and get actual answers.
I’m not interested in creating yet another online course. I’m interested in building a community.
And you’re invited!
Tired of flailing around on your own trying to figure out how to writing your article? Here’s your road map.
Hey there. I’m Lisa Munro.
I’m here to help you develop a scholarly idea that matters and more importantly, one that gets published.
I’m an academic historian by training (PhD, University of Arizona, 2015) and I’ve written and published several of my own academic journal articles using Wendy Belcher’s proven method and brilliant workbook as a guide. I’m now teaching Belcher’s method in my academic writing program for journal article writers who want to develop their writing skills. I’ve been running workshops and writing courses for years, and have helped hundreds of academics and students hone their writing skills.
I’ve learned a lot about the art and science (mostly art) of academic journal article writing over the years and I want to empower you with the tools you need to develop your brilliant ideas and get them published. I’ll teach you the secret handshakes to get into the club and get your ideas out into the world as a submittable academic journal article that you can feel good about sending to the journal of your choice.
I’m your guide through the mysterious land of academic writing and publishing!
Once you’ve completed this program, you’ll come away with some real results that will change how you feel about your writing. And that means you’re going to get more writing done and get published a lot more often from here on out.

You’re going to meet some great new colleagues in this program. Participants come from all different kinds of disciplines and backgrounds, which means that we’re going to have massive collective brainpower to help you solve your thorniest writing problems. I keep these cohorts small (8-10 people), so you and your important work are not going to get lost in the shuffle. You’ll be able to really engage with this intellectual community of fellow scholars and receive valuable feedback on your own work. Community makes a huge difference in how you feel about your writing!
You’ll learn powerful writing skills and rhetorical strategies through a structured system of building blocks. We’re going to break down writing your journal article into small, manageable tasks that you’ll complete each week. You’ll learn all of the writing skills that you should have learned in graduate school (but didn’t) and that aren’t being taught to you in whatever professional development your institution offers. You’re going to see huge progress in your writing skills and abilities.
Most importantly, you’re going to develop your ideas into a real journal article that you can feel confident about submitting to the best journal for your work. By the time we’re done working together, you’ll have learned a method, a system, and skills that you’ll use throughout your career. You’ll get your work published so it can start making a real impact on how we understand some of the biggest questions we’ve got about the world around us.

"Writing with Dr. Lisa Munro was a joy! Dr. Munro was generous in her time and advice during the writing process. Her guidance--clear, honest, and kind--made the article better. I am convinced that her encouragement and enthusiasm for my project made the entire writing process enjoyable. My experience with Lisa made me a stronger writer and a more supportive writing group member. Even after the article went through peer-review, she continued to encourage me and believed in my research. I am thankful for her and continue to work with her one-on-one."

“I really appreciated the space you created. People were able to bring in things that were rough and unpolished and emerge with really excellent, thought-out pieces for their articles, and that is an amazing thing to help people do. Thanks, Lisa."

“I had the great privilege of first working with Dr. Lisa Munro as a part of her 12-week course, Kickstart Your Journal Article, based on Wendy Belcher’s guide, Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks. The workshop was the most invigorating writing experience I have ever had. Dr. Munro prepared us throughout on how to approach journal writing, structure it, revise it, and support one another in the process. It was the first time someone gave me advice on not only how to write academically but also give constructive feedback. At the end of the process, I had a strong journal article, which is now under review with the leading journal in my field.”

“Wendy's book is brilliant, but Lisa's community is even better. Knowing that others would be reading my work and commenting on it really motivated me to deliver every week. Moreover, the comments always made my work better and the meetings brought me joy. I am proud to announce that I submitted my article at the end of the 12-week workshop. It was the best investment for a productive summer break ever!”
FAQs
Can you really write a journal article in twelve weeks?
Yes, you can. Writing is never easy and getting your article together in twelve weeks takes work, commitment, and time on your part. But it is possible to have a submittable article in twelve weeks. You’ll need to start with a text you’ve already written and plan to revise into an article rather than starting from scratch. You’ll be revisiting certain parts of your article, getting feedback, rewriting, and revisiting again. (Write, rinse, and repeat!) The magic of writing is in the revision process and a six month program gives you plenty of time to make your revisions while getting the support and feedback to move your article forward.
Who should participate in this course?
You’ll get the most out of this course if:
You’ve already got a rough draft of your article. It could be a first draft, a rejected article, an abandoned book chapter, a conference paper, or a dissertation chapter. We’ll be revising, rather than drafting from scratch.
Your draft is a research article, either quantitative or qualitative, with a central claim.
You’re a relatively novice author, either an advanced graduate student who wants to publish for job market purposes OR you’re an early career scholar or junior faculty member working on publishing your first few articles.
You’re in some kind of humanities or social science field.
Who is this course NOT for?
The course probably won’t be as helpful for you if you’re:
In a STEM field or medical research
developing an article that isn’t argumentative in nature or doesn’t have a central claim (e.g. systematic literature review, a report, technical writing)
still in the research phase (finish the research, draft something, and then let’s talk)
a book writer (although many of the same principles apply to all academic writing regardless of genre)
Do you record the live sessions?
Although this course is most powerful if you can commit to attending all the weekly sessions, I know that life sometimes happens to the best of us and you might not be able to. I record all of the sessions and email them out weekly to everyone in the cohort.
What funding is available for this course?
I regret to say that I can’t offer discounts or scholarships to help writers fund the course. You’re welcome to choose a monthly payment option (scroll down for payment plan information). If your institution provides you with professional development funds, I’m happy to work with your university’s funding. If you’re not sure if you have access to professional development funds, here’s a guide about how to ask for funding. Let me know how I can support you in your quest.
